ACU Sing Song Changes Venues for 66th Performance
What began as a cappella musical showcase designed to encourage choral singing at Abilene Christian University has now become one of the university's greatest traditions. The 66th ACU Sing Song will take place April 2-3, 2022, this time at the Taylor County Expo Center.
Tickets to the 2022 Sing Song have yet to go on sale, but check back later for more information.
The 2022 Sing Song is the second year of the production to not be held on ACU's campus, thanks in part to ongoing construction at Moody Coliseum.
Since 1957, ACU's student body compete against each other in the singing competition, where instruments and musical accompaniment are against the rules and you can win points for costumes and choreography.
GATA's "The GATA Show on Earth" show from 2019 (below) is a good representation of just how seriously ACU students take Sing Song. I'm sure they also got points for rewriting lyrics to the ever-popular The Greatest Showman.
The competition is open to any campus club or group (up to 100 students per group) who aren't part of the regular or "auditioned" singing groups at ACU (Foundation, Hilltop, Grace Note). Students rewrite or compile medleys of popular songs based on a group theme, and then create elaborate costumes and choreography to match the songs.
To level the playing field, students also act as musical directors and event staff.
Thankfully for ACU has-beens and alumni, the Sing Song Archives launched in 2018, which allows Wildcats and community members to enjoy past Sing Song performances online.
Here's the very first Sing Song performance video in the archives, dating all the way back to 1976. Were the 1976 seniors trying to make a point so close to graduation? Decide for yourself - they won the sweepstakes with this routine.
