West Texas Vineyard Wins California Wine Competition
When you think of great wines from Texas, you probably don't think about the Concho Valley in West Texas. While the Texas Panhandle and the Hill Country have built reputations around their vineyards and quality wines, an unexpected challenger has risen from the San Angelo area.
Christoval Vineyards, south of San Angelo, made waves when one of its signature wines earned top honors in two wine competitions.
In the 2022 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Christoval Vineyards' 2018 Tempranillo won a double gold medal. Against over 5,800 wines and more than 1,000 U.S. wineries, the Tempranillo earned "first place" from every single judge in the competition.
Closer to home, the 2018 Tempranillo wine also won gold at Texas International Wine Competition, as did Christoval's 2018 Montepulciano.
For all you non-drinkers, Tempranillo wines are red wines made with a variety of black grapes originally cultivated in Spain and Portugal. this variety is often blended with other wines or aged in barrels and is known for having flavors of plums and strawberries.
If you want to get your hands on some of Christoval Vineyard's award-winning wines, consider checking retailers like H-E-B and Pinkie's Liquor in the San Angelo/West Texas area. (The vineyard has been partnered with those retailers since 2019 and 2021, respectively.)
And if you can't find Christoval Vineyard wines in-store, they do have merchandise and wine club memberships available for purchase online.
Christoval Winery and Chapel in the Vineyard was purchased by Wendi and Bart Neff, two Angelo State University graduates, in 2019. In addition to the vineyards and winery on-property, the tasting room hosts guests over the weekends and often features live events and music performances. The Chapel in the Vineyard is available for weddings and other events.
