I'll admit it: Ii Rudy “Fearless” Fernandez am a germaphobe, and I've been one for a very long time.

Long before COVID-19, you could find cans of Lysol and sanitizing wipes in my radio studio. People walk in all the time and say, “Rudy, it smells so good in here!”

Yep. That's Lysol you're smelling.

Yes, I Even Sanitize the Microphones

My coworkers and guests probably think I sound like a broken record because I'm constantly saying, “I've sanitized everything. I've even sanitized the microphones, so we can have fun during this interview.”

And I'm serious.

Being a one-armed guy has also made me extremely conscious of what my hand touches. Once I've touched a doorknob, shaken someone's hand or touched something questionable, I make a point not to touch my eyes, nose, mouth or ears until I've washed my hand.

I'm even a paper-towel fanatic. After washing my hand in a public restroom, I'll dry it and use that paper towel to grab the door handle on my way out.

Why?

Because I've watched people use a restroom and walk right out without washing their hands.

They've touched the toilet handle and then grabbed the same doorknob I'm supposed to touch next?

I don't think so, Ms. Peaches!

Two Things I'm Definitely Cleaning

That's why something I recently read caught my attention. Health experts point to doorknobs and light switches as two frequently touched surfaces worth cleaning regularly, particularly during respiratory-virus season.

I've been preaching that sermon for years!

Think about how many hands touch the office light switch, restroom door, breakroom refrigerator, microwave or studio door every single day.

So here's some friendly advice from your neighborhood Abilene germaphobe: Wash your hands, wipe down those high-touch surfaces and think before touching your face.

And if you ever visit my radio studio, don't worry.

I've already sanitized the microphone.
