Dallas Cowboys Scratch Ticket Finally Got My Attention

I may not be much of a sports fan, but apparently the Dallas Cowboys have finally figured out how to get my attention.

The other day after church, I stopped at a convenience store to pay for gas. While I was inside, I noticed a new Dallas Cowboys scratch ticket behind the counter.

I actually stopped and looked at it because my wife loves the Cowboys.

Then Monday morning I came into work and, wouldn't you know it, there was an email waiting for me about that very same Texas Lottery Cowboys scratch ticket.

That was all the encouragement I needed.

I Told My Wife I Bought Cowboys Tickets

I walked into the house and told my wife, "Hey, I got us some Dallas Cowboys tickets."

Her eyes lit up.

"Are you kidding me? We're going to a game?"

I started laughing.

"Yeah, if we win $100,000."

That wasn't exactly what she had in mind.

My wife loves sports, especially football. She'll sit in the living room yelling at the players, yelling at the coaches, and occasionally yelling at me not to interrupt an important play.

Me? Not so much.

Sports And I Have A Complicated History

The funny thing is, I played plenty of sports growing up.

I played football, basketball, and baseball, and competed in track. Because I have one arm, I spent a lot of time proving to coaches that I could do more than they expected.

Some coaches gave me a chance. Others didn't.

Eventually, I got tired of constantly having to prove that I belonged, and somewhere along the way I simply lost interest in sports.

That's why my wife's enthusiasm around our house always makes me laugh.

But A $100,000 Cowboys Ticket Changes Things

The new Texas Lottery Cowboys scratch ticket costs $5 and offers instant prizes of up to $100,000.

Now we're talking my kind of sport.

And here's the part I really like: if I don't win on the scratch ticket, a non-winning ticket can still be entered into second-chance drawings for Cowboys-related prizes and experiences.

The Cowboys and Texas Lottery partnership has also contributed more than $106 million to Texas public education since it began in 2009.

So at least there's some good coming out of all this scratching.

Dad Would Have Loved This One

These tickets also remind me of my dad, God rest his soul.

Dad loved playing the lottery and was one of the luckiest people I've ever known. He won $1,000 or more a couple of times, then usually turned around and gave much of it away to family members or people around the church.

So maybe I'm following in Dad's footsteps a little.

I'm not expecting to become a millionaire.

But if I spend five bucks and win $100,000, I can probably take my wife to a Cowboys game or two.

Until then, she'll be yelling, "Go, Cowboys!"

And I'll be sitting there scratching away saying, "Come on, Cowboys... Daddy needs a winner!"
