As I prepare to watch my grandson graduate from Hamlin High School in Hamlin, Texas tonight, I’ve just learned something that completely floored me, he's not only graduating with his high school diploma, but also with a collegiate associate’s degree. That’s right, before he even walks across the stage, he's already ahead of the game.

Hamlin Collegiate High School Is Years Ahead

What I found out is that Hamlin High has been offering this collegiate-level opportunity for several years now. Students can earn degrees or certifications in fields like welding, nursing, or general academics, all while enjoying the full high school experience. These young Texans are leaving school with more than a handshake and a diploma—they’re stepping into their futures with tools and credentials in hand.

Abilene and San Angelo Schools Are Catching On

Even more exciting is that other school districts, including Abilene and San Angelo—are now starting to follow Hamlin’s lead. More and more students are earning college credit and even full associate degrees before they toss their caps in the air. It's a remarkable shift in how we prepare young people for the real world.

Texas Grads Don’t Always Need a Four-Year Degree

And for students who decide not to pursue a college degree after high school, there are still strong job opportunities in Texas. According to Stacker and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these are some of the highest-paying jobs in Abilene requiring only a high school diploma:

#3 Telecommunications Line Installers - $79,870/year

#2 Transportation Managers - $87,990/year

#1 Police Supervisors - $101,080/year

These careers offer good wages, stability, and in many cases, on-the-job training instead of college tuition.

My Heart Is Swelling With Pride

When my grandson crosses that stage, I won’t just be watching a graduation, I’ll be witnessing a transformation. A young man who enjoyed high school the way every child in America should, but who also worked hard enough to earn a college degree along the way. To say I’m proud would be an understatement. The future is looking brighter than ever, for him, for Texas, and for all of us.
