Texas Jalapeño Popper Cook-Off Has Me Ready for a Road Trip
We’ve got chili cook-offs, brisket competitions, and dessert contests all over Texas. But when I saw the World Championship Jalapeño Popper Cook-off, I stopped what I was doing. Somebody, please hold me back!

The ninth annual competition takes place Saturday, October 10, at Melody Mountain Ranch in Stephenville as part of the 21st Annual Rhymes & Vines Festival. If you’re looking for a reason to get outside after those triple-digit summer days, this one comes with some delicious possibilities.
A Texas Cook-Off That Got My Attention
It’s been a while since I last attended Rhymes & Vines, but I remember what got me motivated to make the trip: the food competition. The music certainly helped, but my appetite had plenty to say about that decision.
It was a fun event and became one of my favorite fall outings. Now, seeing jalapeño poppers getting their own championship competition has me thinking about heading back.
I love that this gives cooks a chance to take something familiar and put their own spin on it. What would you put inside a championship-worthy jalapeño popper?
Recipes, Prizes, and Texas Bragging Rights
The competition brings teams together to prepare their poppers on-site. Judges consider taste, presentation, creativity, ingredient balance, and how well the poppers are cooked. First-, second-, and third-place winners receive prizes, and naturally, bragging rights.
Organizers recently announced that a few competition spots remained. If you think your recipe belongs in the running, visit the official cook-off page for registration, current availability, and updated rules.
Stay for the Live Texas Music
The cook-off is part of Rhymes & Vines, so there’s plenty of music to go along with the weekend fun.
Saturday’s scheduled performers include:
- Ghosts of Hill County — 3 p.m.
- Jenna Paulette — 4:15 p.m.
- Davin James — 5:15 p.m.
- Max & Heather Stalling — 6:30 p.m.
- Prophets and Outlaws — 8 p.m.
- Larry Joe Taylor — 9:30 p.m.
Coming out Friday instead? That lineup includes Meredith Crawford, George Ensle, Zak Webb, Ashton Naylor, Race Ricketts, and Mike Ryan. Check the festival schedule for all performances.
