Abilene Police Step Up Traffic Enforcement Through 2026
If your drive through Abilene looks anything like mine, you’ve become pretty familiar with orange cones, closed lanes, and waiting through another traffic light.
Now there’s another reason to pay attention behind the wheel. Abilene Police will continue increased traffic enforcement through the end of 2026, with Winters Freeway and the South First corridor among the areas receiving extra attention.

My Abilene Commute Comes With Plenty of Cones
One road I use to get to work normally has three lanes: a turn lane and two lanes heading straight. Lately, construction has squeezed traffic down to one lane. Merging over takes patience. Then you reach the traffic light, and that’s a whole other story.
I’m not admitting that the drive tests my patience, but let’s just say I’ve had plenty of opportunities to practice it.
I appreciate that Abilene is improving our roads. Still, changing traffic patterns mean we all need to stay alert, especially around the crews doing that work.
What Abilene Police Will Be Watching For
An email from my friend Rick Tomlin, the Abilene Police Department’s Public Information Coordinator, put the situation into perspective.
According to the department, a Texas Department of Transportation grant supports additional enforcement by selected officers on a month-to-month basis through 2026. The goal is to improve driving habits and make our roads safer.
Officers will focus on:
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Seat belt and child restraint violations
- Driving while intoxicated
A Little Patience Can Help Keep Abilene Safe
Whether you’re traveling Winters Freeway, South First, North First, or another busy Abilene road, give yourself extra time. Watch your speed, use your turn signals, and leave room between vehicles.
Those orange cones mark somebody’s workplace. The people beside them deserve to make it home safely, just like we do.
I get it. We all have somewhere to be. Let’s drive politely, practice defensive driving, and help each other get there safely.
