Cisco College Rodeo Takes Over Abilene During West Texas Fair

There are a lot of reasons I look forward to the West Texas Fair and Rodeo every year. I’ve broadcast live from the fairgrounds more times than I can count, but this year there’s another event happening that hits especially close to home for me.

Cisco College will host the Lone Star Region College Rodeo September 10-12 at Taylor Telecom Arena in Abilene, right as the West Texas Fair and Rodeo gets underway. The fair’s official schedule confirms performances September 10 and 11 at 7 p.m., followed by the Short-Go Saturday, September 12 at 4 p.m.

More Than 500 College Rodeo Athletes Coming To Abilene

More than 500 college rodeo athletes are expected to compete, including over 60 representing Cisco College.

That means some serious college rodeo talent will be rolling into Abilene looking to make their mark in the Lone Star Region and take another step toward bigger things in collegiate rodeo.

Slack competition begins at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with the nighttime performances Thursday and Friday before Saturday afternoon’s Short-Go.

Cisco College Is Personal For Me

I’ll admit I’m a little biased when it comes to Cisco College.

I attended the school back in the late 1970s when we still called it Cisco Junior College, and I earned a couple of my broadcasting certifications there.

But my connection goes much deeper than that. All eight of my children have attended Cisco College at one time or another. So when I say this school has been part of the Fernandez family for decades, I mean it.

I’ve always believed Cisco College offers students an opportunity to get a solid education, earn a degree or certification, and get started without spending a fortune doing it.

College Rodeo Meets The West Texas Fair And Rodeo

What makes this year especially cool is having the Lone Star Region College Rodeo happening alongside one of Abilene’s biggest annual traditions.

The West Texas Fair and Rodeo begins its public fair activities during this same stretch, with the carnival opening September 10 and the fair continuing through September 19.

The Taylor Telecom Arena is at 1607 Expo Drive in Abilene, and separate tickets are required for the Lone Star Region College Rodeo. Reserved seating is listed at $20 for adult balcony seats, $7 for ages 2 through college, and $25 for box seating, plus applicable service fees.

If you love rodeo, want to support college athletes, or just need another reason to head to the West Texas Fair and Rodeo, this one ought to be worth watching.

And yes, I’ll probably be pulling just a little harder for those Cisco College kids.
