With the Labor Day weekend coming up, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have launched their annual 'Drink. Drive. Go To Jail.' campaign, which focuses on informing drivers that you'll face some very severe consequences if you drive drunk.

According to TxDOT's website, there is a traffic crash in Texas every 20 minutes involving a driver who was under the influence of alcohol. Last summer, 336 people were killed and 680 were seriously injured in alcohol-related crashes in Texas. And, that number could go higher.

“Don’t turn your summer fun into a life-changing tragedy by being irresponsible when it comes to drinking and driving,” said TxDOT Deputy Executive Director John Barton. “A safe and sober ride should be at the top of your list when making plans with family and friends. If not, you run the serious risk of being pulled over by law enforcement, being killed or killing someone else. It’s just not worth it.” (TxDOT)

It's very simple. If you drink, just don't drive - even if it's just a few drinks. Or, you'll go to jail.

If you do find yourself without a ride home, there are several other options besides getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. In fact, TxDOT has a website called SoberRides.org, which gives you the option to find a taxi, call a friend, or even post on social media that you need a ride.

Ways to Prevent Drunk Driving

  • Call a taxi
  • Ask a sober friend or family member for a ride
  • Plan ahead with a designated driver
  • Use AAA's 'Tipsy Tow' Free Program
  • Stay where you are

Remember, 'buzzed driving' is still drunk driving.
