Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’ Exists and the First Trailer Is Here
Next time you’re working on a passion project that never seems to get off the ground, even if it takes years or decades, just think of Terry Gilliam for inspiration. The filmmaker has been trying to get his Don Quixote project made since 1998 and finally, yes finally, the movie is completed and actually has a trailer.
The international trailer for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote gives us our first look at Jonathan Pryce’s madman who believes he’s Don Quixote, and Adam Driver as Toby, an advertising exec confused to believe he’s the knight’s trustee squire, Sancho Panza. In case you didn’t already think Driver as Sancho was delightfully great casting, a clip of him heartily saying, “Don Quixote de la Mancha” will seal the deal. The rest of the trailer is full of plenty of shenanigans – sword fighting, dancing, slapping, carriages set on fire. It looks like Driver and Pryce are having a straight-up blast, and I can’t wait to see all the kooky mischief Gilliam and his cast get into.
The film will hop between the 21st century and the 17th century, and features a cast including Olga Kurylenko and Stellan Skarsgard. But there is some bad news: it won’t be arriving as soon as we expected. Yesterday, a new report revealed a legal battle over rights is preventing the film from making its previously set May release date. As The Playlist reports, the film likely won’t get to move forward with release until at least mid-June, so perhaps we can expect a debut on the fall festival circuit. Amazon Studios is still planning to release it stateside, so let’s hope we get to go on Gilliam’s epic quest later this year.
