After a long and successful career, rocker Phil Collins announced his retirement from music on Friday. Collins cited multiple health problems from decades of banging the drums as the reason, including "hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands" according to "The Telegraph".

No matter what genre of music you listen to, you probably have at least heard of Phil Collins whether it was listening to him in the band Genesis or as a solo artist.  Collins is one of only three artists who have sold over 100 million albums worldwide both as a solo artist and separately as a member of a band.  He went into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of Genesis and has received several awards including seven Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and two Golden Globes for his solo work.

Safe to say that he has done pretty good don't you think?

I remember my parents listening to Genesis and his solo stuff as a kid, but I was not really interested in that type of music.  I respected it, just didn't really like it much.  To me, the turning point in listening to any of his music was actually from a show called Miami Vice.

The first time I heard "In The Air Tonight", I instantly became a Genesis/Phil Collins fan.  That song as well as  "I Don't Care Anymore", "Land Of Confusion" and  many others were featured  on the show Miami Vice.  In fact, Phil Collins had more songs on the show than any other artist.  It was those songs on Miami Vice that really intrigued me to listen to more of what Phil Collins and Genesis had out there.

MTV had a hand in introducing me to the music of Genesis and Phil Collins as well.  I remember watching the video to "Land Of Confusion", and laughing at the puppets that were used in the video even though it was a serious song lyrically.

Phil Collins has definitely had an influence on my life and my musical taste and he will be missed in the music world.

Here are a few videos as we bid farewell to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer.
