Kim Petras + More Celebs Slam Trump Administration’s Proposed Trans Policy
The Trump administration is pursuing a policy that would eliminate any formal recognition of transgender individuals by enforcing a strict and inflexible male/female gender assignment based on one's genitalia at birth.
The vile anti-trans effort was discovered in a government memo obtained and released by the New York Times over the weekend, which revealed the Department of Health and Human Services' intention to establish a definition of gender "on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable."
"The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence," read the memo, which was met with a wave of backlash from celebrities across the internet.
Pop star Kim Petras, who is trans, slammed the potential policy, calling Trump "so ugly" and urging people to vote. She also shared her story of getting bullied and physically assaulted in school because she was not permitted to use the locker room for the gender she identified as.
Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson also voiced her disgust with the news, sharing with her Twitter followers, "We stand with the Trans Community and always will."
Ellen Page criticized the "horrible" memo, writing, "This hatred and cruelty is terrifying and destroys lives."
Cher, whose son Chaz is transgender, called the proposal "code [for making] them disappear."
Actress Emma Watson also tossed her hat into the ring with a simple yet powerful photo of her wearing a "Trans Rights Are Human Rights" t-shirt on Twitter.
