Watch the ‘Justice League’ Come Together in the First Theatrical Trailer
When we last left the caped crusader, things weren’t looking all that bright. Sure, he had a new super-friend in the form of Diana Prince, but Superman — the complete-stranger-turned-mortal-enemy-turned-best-friend in Batman’s life — has sacrificed his life to protect Earth (or something) and now the weight of protecting our planet rested heavily on the shoulders of Bruce Wayne. If Wayne could organize others like him, then maybe Earth could stand a fighting chance.
Queue the first trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, picking up where Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice left off and introducing us to the superhero organization of the same name. It’s always struck me as an odd choice to start things off with a Justice League movie; unlike their Marvel counterparts, the Justice League has always seemed like the NATO of the superhero world, less a regular team than a group of separate entities who periodically band together to fight a common enemy. And while the Justice League trailer might not convince any doubters that the DC Cinematic Universe is aiming for a lighter tone than the grimdark Batman v Superman, there’s at least a little bit of brevity evident in the trailer. That line about Batman’s superpower being that he’s rich? I feel like we’ve been waiting decades to hear someone say that in a Batman movie.
The real standout of this first trailer is Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, who — in addition to riding atop the Batmobile into battle — seems to have the best chemistry with Ben Affleck. Momoa seems to be playing Aquaman less like the king of the ocean and more like a CrossFit personal trainer, totally jacked about everything going on and happy to hang out with the bros. If ever an actor was meant to replace Gerard Butler as Snyder’s signature alpha male, it’s Momoa. Not bad for a character who most people think only talks to fish.
Here’s the full plot synopsis for Justice League:
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash — it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
In addition to Affleck and Momoa, Justice League will star Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, J.K. Simmons, and Amber Heard. It will hit theaters on November 17, 2017.
