El Paso Barber Celebrates Years of Sensory-Friendly Haircuts

An El Paso barber understands that for kids, getting that perfect haircut can be important but for many children on the autism spectrum, a simple trip to the barbershop can be overwhelming.

That’s why Edgar “Scissorhands” of The Gentlemen’s Barbershop has continued providing sensory-friendly haircuts for local children and families.

I first met Edgar nearly five years ago while doing a KVIA Sunday Funday story about his efforts to provide free sensory-friendly haircuts to children on the autism spectrum. Since then, his work has continued to grow and so has the community’s support for his mission.

When parents bring their children in for a haircut with Edgar, they can expect an environment designed around their child’s sensory needs. Edgar can dim the lights, keep music and other loud sounds to a minimum, and make other adjustments based on requests from parents.

And the sensory-friendly experience isn’t just for boys. Young girls can also receive sensory-friendly haircuts.

Last year, Edgar received another special honor when the City of El Paso recognized his contributions by naming September 16 as Edgar ‘Scissorhands’ Day. The date also falls on National Barbershop Day.

“It can be stressful when you go to other barber shops and there’s a lot more people there and it’s loud,” Edgar said. “Here, we cater to the children. They want to look good on their first day, so that’s what I’m here for. To make these kids feel good about themselves.”

El Paso Barber Celebrates Years of Sensory-Friendly Haircuts With First Pitch Fundraiser

Now, Edgar is taking his mission to the baseball field! On Friday, September 18, Edgar will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at an El Paso Chihuahuas game and he’s inviting the entire community to come out and support him.

Tickets are $22, with proceeds going back to the barbershop to help Edgar purchase new equipment and supplies so he can continue providing sensory-friendly haircuts to children who need a more comfortable and accommodating experience.

Fans who want to purchase tickets can reach out to Edgar through his social media. He is also offering to deliver tickets to supporters.

For Edgar, what started as a way to help local children has grown into a mission that continues to make an impact in the El Paso community.

After nearly five years of watching his work grow, this first pitch is another milestone—and a chance for the community to help Edgar keep doing what he does best: helping kids feel confident, comfortable and ready to take on the world.
