I know I'm getting older because I suddenly love HGTV. And if they decided to make a series about their newest list, I'd totally binge-watch especially since Texas made the list!

If you’ve ever dreamed of strolling through a Texas town that feels like it belongs on a postcard and also has just enough quirk to keep things interesting, then look no further. One little Central Texas gem just got national recognition from HGTV as one of the most charming small downtowns in America, and it turns out its history is just as colorful as its present.

To come up with their list of the “40 Most Charming Small Downtowns in America,” HGTV wasn’t just looking for pretty buildings or cute coffee shops (though those don’t hurt). The network said they were on the hunt for “vibrant towns that invite you in and encourage you to stay and explore.” Out of the thousands of little towns across the U.S., only 40 made the cut, and just one from Texas!

Bastrop’s Claim to Fame on HGTV

HGTV called Bastrop “the most historic small town in Texas” and they weren’t kidding. Founded back in 1832 along the Colorado River, Bastrop has managed to hang onto its roots while still growing into a modern-day destination.

Its downtown is stacked with hundreds of historic sites, buildings, and landmarks that made the National Register of Historic Places. But it’s not just about old brick walls and plaques, Bastrop has a walkable, welcoming downtown full of shops, restaurants, and a surprisingly lively arts and music scene. In other words, it’s got that small-town Texas charm and the energy of a place that refuses to stay stuck in the past.

Of course, no Texas town makes a “most charming” list without some quirks, and Bastrop has plenty. For starters, horror fans know it as the home of the gas station from the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre which you can actually visit. Talk about small-town charm with a spooky twist.

If scary movie history isn’t your thing, Bastrop’s got you covered with outdoor adventures at Bastrop State Park, where the famous loblolly “Lost Pines” stretch across 6,000 acres. Think camping, hiking, swimming, golfing, and plenty of spots to just unplug.

It looks like Bastrop has something to offer everyone. To check out the entire list, check here.
