The holiday season can be one of joy, love, and peace (well, for some). Unfortunately, we live in a world where bad things happen, things we don't prepare for.

This is why the Texas Department of Public Safety has warned all holiday travelers to plan their trips and pack an emergency kit.

Packing Texas Emergency Kits

It may seem obvious to throw a couple bottles of water, some snacks, and maybe a battery pack in your bag when traveling to, from, or inside of Texas, but you should really take the proper precautions for any scenario, just in case.

For instance Texas DPS encourages all travelers to create emergency kits with the following items:

  • Water and non-perishable snacks
    • Snacks like granola bars, crackers, and nuts are great for long-term traveling
  • Blankets and first-aid kits
    • Bringing enough medical supplies for minor injuries is always a must when hitting the open road
  • Tool kit, jumper cables, and ice scraper
    • Depending on the time of year, ice scrapers may be required for safe driving
  • Medications
    • Always make sure you have enough prescription meds for all travelers when disembarking

DPS also includes safety tips for hitting the road during the holiday season. They emphasize the importance of monitoring the road and weather conditions along your route before heading out.

When behind the wheel, either have a passenger handle the navigation, or utilize the hands-free GPS to eliminate distractions when driving.

You should always wear your seatbelt and slow down for heavy traffic or when weather conditions turn dangerous.

Oh yeah, and if you're traveling with a firearm, just make sure it's safely secured in your vehicle and hidden from plain sight. You don't want it to become an involuntary Christmas gift for a thief.

Best And Worst Times To Travel For Thanksgiving 2025

The Updated 2025 U.S. Government 'Do Not Travel' List

Traveling to unique and exotic places rather than the usual tourist traps can be quite an adventure. However, it's crucial to research your destination thoroughly.

While every trip comes with some risk, requiring you to mind your surroundings and take some precautions, there are some places you should probably avoid because the risks far outweigh the benefits.

The United States government has a helpful website that lists travel advisories that are in place for countries all over the world, ranking the risk from Level 1 through Level 4.

You should NOT travel there if a country is issued a Level 4 advisory. As of November, the countries below are on the 'Do Not Travel' list.
