Lubbock Police Search For Clues In Tragic Cold Case And Shooting

Two ongoing investigations have the Lubbock Police Department (LPD) scratching their heads. A reward was increased for any information regarding a fatal hit-and-run from 2017 that left one man dead while another man, more recently, opened fire on his neighbors before turning the gun on himself.

Here are the latest on both cases that we know so far.

2017 Fatal Hit-and-Run Investigation

On February 10, 2017, 21-year-old Alcadio Barron was walking on the street near Marsha Sharp and Avenue Q when he was struck by an unknown driver, killing him instantly.

For nearly 10 years, LPD has been searching for the driver that struck and killed Barron, despite finding no resolution for the case.

This is why LPD is increasing the cash reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of the driver to $5,000. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Crime Line at (806) 741-1000.

Aggravated Assault and Suicide in Lubbock

A second investigation in Lubbock stems from an incident that occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Just after 5 a.m., officers were called to the 5500 block of 19th Street for a report of shots fired.

When they arrived to the apartment complex, they were met by 34-year-old Malcom Smith who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Also in Malcom's apartment was the body of Parris Smith, 24, with whom there is no relation.

Although the investigation is ongoing, initial findings indicate that Parris, who was possibly under the influence of drugs, grabbed a firearm and asked to enter Malcom's apartment. The two were neighbors.

Once inside Malcom's apartment, Parris fired through the floor into the apartment below before shooting Malcom. He then turned the gun and shot himself. There were no other injuries reported after Malcom was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries.
