Meet Your Neighbors at Tyler’s National Night Out Celebrations
(Tyler, Texas) National Night Out is coming up Tuesday, October 6. It’s a great opportunity to get out of the house and meet neighbors. Neighborhoods throughout East Texas will be hosting block parties where neighbors get the chance to meet one another and exchange contact information, share stories, and get to know one another. Local law enforcement will stop by many of these block parties so residents can meet the officers patrolling their part of the community.
When Is National Night Out in Tyler?
National Night Out is generally held in August, while Texas and select areas celebrate it on the first Tuesday in October when it's somewhat cooler. We know it can still be hot, but not nearly as hot as August.

What Happens at a National Night Out Block Party?
While my neighborhood has not held a block party, I have been to a block party in other parts of Tyler. They can be a lot of fun. It’s like a big potluck, with food coming off the grill, side dishes, desserts, and drinks. Kids from all over the neighborhood are playing together while their parents are talking with others who live nearby.
Once you get to talking to your neighbors, you can learn a lot about them. In many cases, they could end up helping you solve an issue at home or help you while you're away on vacation.
The City of Tyler and the Tyler Police Department will host three community celebrations on Tuesday, October 6. These celebrations will feature family activities, food, local vendors, along with members of the Tyler Police Department and other organizations that serve the community.

Why Getting to Know Your Neighbors Matters
There will be many other block parties happening throughout East Texas. If your neighborhood is planning a party, I'd suggest you make an appearance and get to know your neighbors and local law enforcement. Build those relationships; you never know when you'll need to rely upon them.
