Warmer weather is here in Wichita Falls and one negative to that is that the mosquitos are buzzing around again. The city has announced some updates to help deal with the mosquitos in 2026.

Every summer I say the same thing, do mosquitos actually serve a purpose? Yes, they're a food source for some animals. To me, they just spread disease and annoy the crap out of me on a nice summer night. Looks like the Wichita Falls -Wichita County Public Health District has two advancements for mosquito prevention this year.

The city is implementing something called (WALS) Wide. Area. Larvicide. Sprayer. Unlike traditional larvicide applications that require technicians to locate and treat individual breeding sites, WALS technology uses a specialized turbine system to distribute larvicide droplets over a broad area, allowing treatment materials to reach difficult-to-access mosquito habitats.

Are the mosquitos really bad in your neighborhood? Let the city know on their website. The new system connects these public service requests directly to field operations, allowing mosquito concerns submitted by residents to be assigned, tracked, and managed in real time. Technicians can receive assignments in the field, investigate reported mosquito activity, document findings, and implement appropriate control measures more efficiently than ever before. The platform integrates mapping, surveillance, larviciding activities, treatment records, and public service requests into a single operational system.

As always you can help prevent the mosquito population from growing in your own backyard. The city asks if you could be sure you're doing the following.

  • Dump standing water around their homes weekly. Mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in as little as one week, making the elimination of standing water one of the most effective methods of mosquito prevention
  • Clean gutters and drainage areas
  • Remove unused containers that collect water
  • Maintain swimming pools and bird baths
