We're taking a look at the top ten states for lightning deaths from 2011-2020 according to a report from the Lightning Safety Council.

Texas is second only to Florida in the number of deaths caused by lightning. There are even more facts gathered in an article by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • From 2006 to 2021 there have been 444 deaths from lightning strikes in the U.S.
  • Males are four times more likely than women to get struck by lightning.
  • The average age of a person struck by lightning is 37.
  • Lightning deaths often occur on the weekend, particularly on Saturdays and in the afternoon.
  • Two out of three lightning deaths occur between noon and 6:00 pm.
  • About one-third of lightning occurs indoors through plumbing, wiring, etc.
