Summer in Texas isn't just something you see. It's something you smell.

One whiff of chlorine, fresh-cut grass, sunscreen, or mesquite smoke, and suddenly you're a kid again. You're riding your bike until dark, spending all day at the pool, or hanging around a backyard BBQ waiting for somebody to finally say, "Alright, food's ready”, or “ Get your rear end home now!”

I recently asked some of our listeners a simple question: What's the one smell that reminds you it's summer?

The responses rolled in faster than a Texas thunderstorm.

A lot of folks immediately went to the classics. Chlorine, sunscreen, tanning oil, and even the iconic smell of Hawaiian Tropic made the list. If you grew up in Texas, that's basically the official scent of summer vacation.

Others painted a picture that could only happen in the Lone Star State.

One listener described fresh-cut grass, sprinklers running, and a well-seasoned BBQ pit firing up down the block. Another mentioned mesquite smoke, while others said fresh-cut silage, homemade ice cream, honeysuckle bushes, coconut sunblock, golf course fairways, and even sizzling fajitas. OK, I’m officially hungry.

Honestly, I could smell half of these comments just reading them.

What's interesting is how many of these smells are tied to moments and people rather than just seasons.

Maybe it’s that honeysuckle bush by the front door. Maybe it's homemade ice cream at a family reunion. Maybe it's the smell of a golf course before the Texas heat turns the fairway into a frying pan.

Either way, these smells have a way of taking us back. And then there was the listener who answered, "Plan B and garbage juice."

Look, I don't know what kind of summer memories we're unpacking there, but it definitely earned a spot on the list.
