Texas Drivers Urged to Move Over or Slow Down as DPS Renews Safety Push
If there’s one thing that gets my blood pressure up in Texas faster than a Buc-ee’s exit ramp on a holiday weekend, it’s folks ignoring the Move Over Law. Texas Department of Public Safety just dropped a reminder on their Facebook page, and honestly, it’s one we all need tattooed on our steering wheels.
Texas DPS Reaffirms the Move Over Law
Here’s what they said as part of National Crash Responder Safety Week:
“As part of National Crash Responder Safety Week, DPS reminds Texans of the importance of the Move Over, Slow Down law. Every day, first responders work alongside the road to help their fellow Texans in need.
Your actions to move over or slow down when you see flashing lights activated could mean the difference between life and death. Help ensure everyone makes it home safely, and always #MoveOverSlowDown.” (TXDPS)

What Exactly Is the Move Over Law in Texas?
Here’s the simple version:
If you see flashing lights like police, fire, EMS, TxDOT, or even tow trucks, you must either move over one lane OR slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit in Texas.
And yes, this includes construction and maintenance workers, too. If they’re out there in 108-degree heat fixing the road you complain about daily, the least you can do is not buzz them like you're auditioning to be a stock car driver.
Don't Be That Guy
Texas DPS has stressed this for years, and the fact that they’re still reminding us means too many drivers are still blasting by without a care in the world.
Don’t be that guy. Nobody likes that guy.
A Good Time to Also Mention… Slow Pokes
While we’re at it, I’m going to bring this up because this also grinds my gears. If you're camping in the left lane, get out. I wrote an article about this, which you can check out here. But the bottom line is to have respect for others on the highway. Don’t be that dude camping in the passing lane. Okay, I’m off my soapbox now.
Texas roads are wild enough. Let’s not make them any wilder.
