Food Bank Launches Million Meal Challenge To Feed Hungry Families This September

One…million…meals.

That is a big, bold goal, but if there is one thing I know about Texas, it is that we know how to show up when our neighbors need us.

The Food Bank of West Central Texas is launching its Million Meal Challenge throughout September as part of Hunger Action Month. The community-wide campaign will help provide food for children, families, and seniors facing hunger across our region. And these days, with the economy the way it is, that's super important.

A Little Help Can Put a Lot of Food on the Table

Here is the number that really grabbed me: Every $10 donated can help provide approximately 50 meals to folks in Texas. Ten bucks to feed 50 people? I’m in!

That means skipping one fast-food run, or one overpriced coffee with a name longer than a  Metallica song, can make a legitimate difference for several families.

The Food Bank serves a 13-county region through more than 150 partner agencies, food pantries, and meal sites. This is not some faraway problem. These are people living in our communities, attending our schools and working alongside us.

There Are Several Ways to Join the Challenge

You do not have to write a giant check to help. During September, you can:

• Make a donation.
• Volunteer your time.
• Start a fundraiser through your business, church, or organization.
• Share the challenge and encourage others to participate.

“Reaching one million meals will take all of us,” Food Bank President and CEO Brandon Forrest said. “Every action moves us closer to that goal.”

The Million Meal Challenge runs from September 1 through September 30, with the Food Bank sharing updates throughout the month.

One million meals may sound like a mountain, but mountains get moved one donation, one volunteer, and one generous Texan at a time.
