If you drive Loop 322 in Abilene, Texas, on a daily basis like I do, then you already know that this stretch of road is a different animal…it’s like our own little Autobahn.

According to reports from the Abilene Police Department, there have been 66 crashes and one death on Loop 322 over the past year. Let that sink in for a second.

That’s not just a stat…that’s a problem sitting right in the middle of our daily commute.

They Dropped the Speed Limit…But Did It Matter?

Back in early March, the speed limit along Loop 322 was lowered from 75 to 65. On paper? Makes sense. In reality? I don’t think most drivers got the memo…or they saw it and said “nah.”

I drive that loop multiple times a day, and I can tell you straight up, people are still flying. I’m talking NASCAR audition speeds. It doesn’t matter if it’s early morning, lunch rush, or late at night…that road stays moving fast.

And yeah, I’ll be honest, I’ve caught myself creeping over the new limit too. That change takes some getting used to. But there’s a difference between “oops, I’m doing 70” and folks blasting past you like you’re parked.

Where’s the Patrol Presence?

Now, I’m not saying law enforcement isn’t out there. But personally, I hardly ever see consistent patrol on that loop.

You’d think with numbers like 66 crashes and a fatality, we’d see a little more regular presence from the Texas Department of Public Safety or local officers keeping speeds in check.

Maybe they’re there, and I’m just missing them…or maybe that stretch just has a mind of its own.

This Road Feels…Different

I don’t know how else to explain it, it’s like Loop 322 flips a switch in people. You merge on, and suddenly everyone’s in a hurry. Lanes weaving, speed climbing, zero patience. It’s not just one or two drivers, it’s the whole vibe of that road.

And yeah, we’ve all been guilty of pushing it a little. But with crashes stacking up like that, it might be time for all of us to pump the brakes…literally.

We All Use It…So It’s On All of Us

This isn’t some random highway out in the middle of nowhere. This is our loop. It circles the Key City. We all depend on it.

So, whether it’s the speed limit change, more patrols, or just drivers deciding to chill out a bit, something’s gotta give. Because 66 crashes? That’s not just bad luck. That’s a pattern.
