According to a recent article from Comparitech, Qilin is behind the cyberattack that has folks in Abilene and even across Texas on edge. The group gave a May 27 deadline for the ransom to be paid, but the City of Abilene has made it clear that they’re not going to pay it.
What Do Texans Do Now?
Well, there’s a strong chance that the stolen data could be leaked online. And that means it’s time for all of us to be smart and take a few extra steps to protect ourselves. I sure don't want a surprise in my credit line or bank account.

Protect Your Data Now!
It very well may be an attack that will compromise your data in the City of Abilene's system. So, it is crucial to take steps now to avoid this senseless cyber attack.
- Change your passwords, especially if you’ve had any kind of interaction with city services.
- Be on alert for phishing emails or calls pretending to be from city departments or banks.
- Keep an eye on your credit—consider placing a fraud alert or freeze through the credit bureaus.
- Monitor your data—if you get notified about unusual activity, don’t ignore it.
I know. It’s frustrating, no doubt. But staying informed and being proactive can go a long way in keeping your info safe. I’m curious to see how this whole thing unfolds after this deadline. Hopefully, my data isn’t just out there flying around in cyberspace for anyone to jack.
Stay safe, Texas!
