Memorial Day Tribute in Abilene Set for Monday
This Monday, May 26, 2025, the Texas Veterans Cemetery in Abilene will host a solemn and patriotic Memorial Day observance beginning at 11 a.m. The community is invited to attend this meaningful tribute, organized by the Dyess Chiefs Group, with participation from local and military organizations that share a deep respect for those who gave their lives in service to our country.

A Patriotic Program of Remembrance
The observance will feature powerful performances by the Abilene Community Band, a group that’s been part of Abilene’s cultural heartbeat since July 4, 1976. Known for their stirring renditions of American classics, the band will set the tone with patriotic selections meant to honor our fallen heroes. The ceremony will also include the Dyess Air Force Base Honor Guard and the West Texas Patriot Guard Riders, ensuring a respectful and moving presentation for all in attendance.

Meet the Maestro: Joe Stevens, a Living Legacy
The Abilene Community Band performs under the direction of Mr. Joe Stevens, a name that rings through the halls of local music education with pride. A retired Abilene ISD band director, Stevens has taught generations of students across Lee Elementary, Mann Junior High, Abilene High, and Cooper High. I’m proud to say he was once my band director, and yes, I was absolutely his favorite student (you can just ask me again, and I'll tell you the same!).
