Know How to Keep Your Stuff Safe at the Beach or Pool in Texas
When you head to the beach or the pool, what do you do with your stuff? I'm talking car keys, ID, debit cards, your cash, and of course, your phone. You’d think we were trying to smuggle state secrets the way we guard these things. But crime still happens when you least expect it.

Now, I may have only one arm (yes, I’ve heard all the jokes, and no, I do not swim in circles), but I’ve got a lifetime of wisdom when it comes to traveling light and smart.
My Go-To Move: The Waterproof Fanny Pack
I pack a small waterproof fanny pack everywhere I go. It’s light, secure, and fits the essentials. Before I bought it, I used a regular one, with my stuff wrapped in a Ziploc baggie. Believe it or not, that worked just fine. Sometimes I wonder why I spent money on the fancy waterproof one. Either way, dry is good.
When You Want to Carry Nothing at All
There are days I don’t even want to mess with a fanny pack. In that case, I’ll take one car key, throw it on a bead chain like dog tags, and wear it around my neck. Simple and secure.
Tips for Poolside Peace of Mind:
- Use a waterproof fanny pack or pouch
- Ziploc bags still work, don’t knock'em
- Travel light: only take what you need
- Take turns watching your goods with friends
- Stash valuables in creative spots (unused diaper, anyone?)

My personal stash hack: The unused diaper hack is really good when you want to keep your wallet and cash safe. Wrap your wallet and your money in an unused baby diaper and wrap it up like you normally would when you're going to dispose of it.
Bottom line: Plan ahead, pack smart, and enjoy the sun. Whether you’re swimming laps or just floating in the lazy river, don’t let your day go sideways because your phone took a dive or somebody stole your stuff.
Finally, There are some safe places you can go swimming right here in West Texas that are more secure as you'll see in the photo gallery below. Whether you stay at an Airbnb home with a pool or rent a hotel room for the day. Stay alert, stay safe, and I'll see you at the water’s edge.
