Texas Governor Greg Abbott has just announced that the community of Harker Heights, which is just north of Austin is now an official Music Friendly Community adding to the long list of communities that are designated as "music friendly." Surprisingly, Abilene has been a member of the Music Friendly Community as well.

Governor Abbott and the Texas Music Office officially certified Abilene as a “Music Friendly” city, making Abilene one of the many cities to hold the distinction of being a Music Friendly Community. Since then several event venues have opened in the Key City.

In the Lone Star State music is a major part of our heritage, culture, and lifestyle. Being a member of the Texas Music Friendly Community with support from the Governor's Texas Music Office has helped our cities create more than 210,000 direct and indirect jobs through music alone.

According to the most recent figures, Texas music has generated over $27.3 billion in economic activity in 2019 alone. The Texas music-friendly communities certified by the Texas Music Office are serious about developing local music to prompt economic growth within our cities and the state.

Congratulations to Harker Heights as it joins the over 30 other Texas cities that are part of the official Music Friendly Community including Abilene, Austin, Fort Worth, Denton, San Antonio, Lindale, Stephenville, Conroe, San Angelo, Nacogdoches, McKinney, Alpine, Bastrop, Waxahachie, Waco, New Braunfels, Victoria, Lubbock, Dennison, Arlington, Brenham, Dripping Springs, Round Rock, El Paso, Vidor, Grand Prairie, Port Aransas, San Marcos, Dallas, Brian, McAllen, and Salado.

The most surprising part was that Houston is not an official member of the Music Friendly Community. However, the Texas Music Office in Austin has verified that Houston is working on getting its documentation together to be certified as a music-friendly community as well.

Finally, the Texas Music Office recognizes all genres of music. Governor Abbott and the Texas Music Office encourage cities to grow music in a way to grow the economy. To find out who's playing where always check out the Texas Music Office's website.
