Greta Gerwig Vows Not to Work With Woody Allen Again
While most celebs in attendance at the Golden Globes donned all-black and Time’s Up pins to show their support for women in the industry, many were calling out specific people for their seeming hypocrisy. Many on social media reminded us of allegations against James Franco and Gary Oldman, two big winners from the night, and when Greta Gerwig was asked point blank if she regretted working with Woody Allen in the past, she attempted to side-step the question. On Tuesday, she finally had an answer.
“I would like to speak specifically to the Woody Allen question which I have been asked about a couple of times recently, as I worked for him on a film that came out in 2012,” Gerwig told The New York Times in a joint interview with her and Aaron Sorkin. “It is something that I take very seriously and have been thinking deeply about, and it has taken me time to gather my thoughts and say what I mean to say. I can only speak for myself and what I’ve come to is this: If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film. I have not worked for him again, and I will not work for him again.”
Gerwig previously worked with Allen on his film To Rome with Love in 2012. She explained that she’d come to her decision by reading Dylan Farrow’s op-eds in which she accused her father of molesting her.
“Dylan Farrow’s two different pieces made me realize that I increased another woman’s pain, and I was heartbroken by that realization,” she said. “I grew up on his movies, and they have informed me as an artist, and I cannot change that fact now, but I can make different decisions moving forward.”
