Another year is in the books and it's time to celebrate as we 'ring in the new year'. Well, as many of our festivities include boozing it up, it's most important to plan a safe trip to and from the party.

Whether your plans include going to local bars or a friend's house party, we all know that many New Year's Eve parties include alcohol...and lots of it. Well, there's no sense in risking your life or lives of others when it can easily be prevented.

Heck, at the least, avoid a DWI. One of those alone can cost you thousands of dollars and possible jail time, among other penalties.

Here are some great ways to enjoy a safe New Year's Eve:

Designated Driver - Just make sure that DD will definitely not indulge, so pick someone you trust to keep sober.

Uber - Abilene finally has Uber and there are plenty of local drivers ready to get you home safely. Make sure you install the Uber app on your smartphone before you head out for the evening.

Tipsy Tow Program - AAA's Tipsy Tow service provides a complimentary ride and vehicle tow up to three miles from the point of pickup to drivers who have consumed alcohol on New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July. Tipsy Tow service is available to members and non-members. Ask for a Tipsy Tow by calling 1-800-AAA-HELP [222-4357].

Call a Cab/Taxi - While they may be harder to come by on New Year's Eve (or any other big party night), it's still a good option to utilize if you plan on drinking and don't have a designated driver.

  • ABI Taxi - 325-673-4700
  • Classic Cab - 325-677-8294
  • Roadrunner Tax - 325-232-3295
  • A-1 Yellow Checker Cab - 325-677-2446
  • Checker Cab Company - 325-677-4334

Stay at Home - Yeah, going to a party or bar is fun, but you can also party your tail off at home with worrying about cops, cabs, wrecks, etc. If you invite friends over, have them bring a sleeping bag and make it a slumber party.
