SPOILERS for the clip above: I think Jennifer Lawrence finally freed herself from the X-Men franchise.

At least that’s what it sure looks like in the new Dark Phoenix trailer. Lawrence’s Mystique confronts Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey and then ... well, then Jennifer Lawrence isn’t in the rest of the trailer and the X-Men are standing over someone’s grave.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

It’s so weird that we now have two movie versions of the Dark Phoenix Saga, and both of them involve Jean Grey wearing leather jackets and murdering her friends when that is not really what the original comics were about. Yeah, the comic book Jean became incredibly powerful and lost control of herself. Yes, she wiped out a couple of alien planets as Dark Phoenix. But she never killed Cyclops or Professor Xavier or, in this movie, Mystique (who wasn’t even on the X-Men, but whatever) and maybe Magneto (Michael Fassbender, who I suspect is getting a little tired of these X-Men movies too).

Dark Phoenix opens in theaters on June 7.
