Charles Perry (R-Lubbock) has been elected for the Senate District 28 seat in Tuesday's (September 9) special election.

The Sweetwater, Texas native took an early lead and held it through the night, earning an estimated 53 percent of ballots tallied from 51 counties as of 8:52 p.m.

Perry's closest contender, Jodey Arrington, earned an estimated 27 percent of ballots cast.

"I am honored that the citizens of Senate District 28 have selected me to fill Chancellor Robert Duncan's vacated senate seat," Perry said in a statement. "From day one to Election Day, our work ethic never subsided and our grassroots army truly turned out the vote."

In an interview with KFYO's Chad Hasty last month, Perry touched on immigration reform as a focal point for his campaign and hot-button issue for Texas residents.

"People are literally at a bubbling point and see what we're not able to do as a state due to federal jurisdiction issues," said Perry. "They're almost at a point of tossing the federal jurisdiction issues out so we can protect our state."
