As a matter of fact, there have been 12 crashes that have resulted in 16 fatalities just in the first six months of 2022 alone. Also, that number equals the total number of fatal traffic crashes in Abilene in all of 2021.

In an effort to have a positive impact on this deadly trend, APD has teamed up with TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) for a statewide program called "Operation Slow Down" which "will go towards helping change driving habits and make the roads safer for all drivers. Selected officers will target specific areas of Abilene by increasing enforcement for a two-week period, through a grant provided by the Texas Department of Transportation.", according to a Facebook post.

When is Operation Slow Down?

According to an APD post on Facebook, it will run from Tuesday, June 7th through Tuesday, June 21st.

During this time, APD encourages you to practice defensive driving and slow down.

Heck, it only takes a few minutes to get from one side of Abilene to another, so there's really no need to be speeding through town in the first place.

By being a better driver, the life you save could be your own.

Now let's take a moment to decompress and check out these funny (and fake) Texas State Symbols.
