Abilene Black Chamber of Commerce Host the 21st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Dinner on January 21st
One of the most noted individuals of our time will be celebrated on January 21st with a dinner given by the Abilene Black Chamber of Commerce. Martin Luther King, Jr. best known for his non-violent civil rights movement delivered his, now famous, "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 at the March on Washington.
In 1964 King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work towards racial equality through non-violent means. He, sadly, was assassinated April 4,1968 in Memphis. However, King is still receiving awards and recognition with awards such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom which he was awarded posthumously in 1977 and in 2004 he was given the Congressional Gold Medal.
It was in 1986 that a day of honor was given to Martin Luther King, Jr. January 21st is now a federally recognized holiday.
