Venezuela’s Catatumbo Lightning Show is an Amazing Phenomena
We think we have cool lightning storms here in Texas but Venezuela blows us away. They have what is called Catatumbo Lightning Shows every night for 160 nights a year.
This happens only at the mouth of the Catatumbo River where is flows into Lake Maracaibo. There seems to be a perfect atmospheric combination that allows this to happen over and over every night.
The perfect reaction is called a tropospheric ozone and it allows for lightning strikes to happen 10 hours a day, 280 times an hour for 140 - 160 days a year. That totals about 40,000 lightning strikes per night. The photos/videos, as you will see above, of this are amazing.
It has happened for centuries and is even used as a beacon to sailors, who nicknamed it, Lighthouse of Maracaibo. It can be seen for many, many miles.
Nature is a wonderful thing!
