What the world needs now, in these turbulent and chaotic times, is more erotic thrillers. They were all over the place in the ’90s, and yet somehow they’ve fallen out of favor in the decades since There have been a few cropping up in recent years, inspiring hope for some kind of erotic thriller renaissance; an obsessive younger man terrorized Jennifer Lopez in last year’s The Girl Next Door and Morris Chestnut got caught in between two possessive women in this summer’s When the Bough Breaks. Today brings the first look at the next film to join their esteemed ranks and contribute to the slow resurgence of the noble but underserved erotic thriller.

Katherine Heigl stars in Unforgettable as Tessa Connover, a woman going through a rough patch. Her husband files for a divorce, and takes primary custody of their adorable daughter. Worse still, he’s already got a new woman in his life to help raise the child and effectively replace Tessa. And to make matters even worse, Tessa’s horrified to learn that this new woman is the super-cool Rosario Dawson.

It’s enough to make a woman want to ... kill.

The newly unveiled trailer appears to spell out the film’s entire plot, with Heigl’s character slowly losing her marbles and descending into homicidal rage until she and Dawson engage in a head-smashing catfight. To the strains of Kanye West's “Wolves,” Heigl terrorizes Dawson by sending her a faintly threatening flower arrangement, making her a fake Facebook page, stealing her ring, and in one scene, skulking outside her window. In another, slightly more horrifying scene, Heigl appears to masturbate while sitting in front of a laptop. As one does.

Altogether, this looks like a silly movie that I will go see twice on opening day, four times in total over the course of its opening weekend. The directorial debut of veteran producer Denise Di Novi, Unforgettable will open on April 21.
