Telemachus Orfanos, or "Tel" to his friends, was one of the survivors of the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas, Nev., in October of 2017. Just over a year later, however, the 27-year-old fell victim to another wave of gunfire at the Borderline Bar & Grill, in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Orfanos worked as a security guard at Borderline, according to People. He and other country music fans from the Thousand Oaks area who had lived through the Route 91 tragedy found solace as they gathered together at the country-themed bar. Now, the young man's mother, Susan Orfanos, says that good intentions and ideas are not enough to fix the problem.

“I don’t want prayers. I don’t want thoughts. I want gun control,” she says in an interview with local reporters. “And I hope to God nobody else sends me any more prayers. No. More. Guns.”

Susan Orfanos says there is one solution to the epidemic that affected her son twice and took his life.

“He made it through Las Vegas; he came home,” Orfanos says. “And he didn’t come home last night, and the two words I want you to write are: gun control. Right now — so that no one else goes through this. Can you do that? Can you do that for me? Gun control.”

Twelve people are dead following the Wednesday night (Nov. 7) shooting. The Borderline Bar & Grill was hosting "college country night" when a tall, white male, dressed in all black, entered and began shooting around 11:20PM local time; the shooter, 28-year-old Ian David Long, was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Long was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and although his motive is not known at the time of publication, he was known to police due to past minor infractions.

According to its website, the Borderline Bar & Grill is "Ventura County's Largest Country Dance Hall & Live Music Venue." Borderline has been open since the late 1980s, when it was located in Malibu, Calif.; it moved to Thousand Oaks in 1993. Artists such as Lee BriceTyler Farr and more have performed at Borderline over the years.

Thousand Oaks is located about 40 miles west of Los Angeles, and was recently ranked as the third-safest city in the United States by Niche.com, which analyzes "crime rates for murder, assault, rape, burglary and other crime statistics by city ... based on data from the FBI and U.S. Census."
