Ted Nugent says his friend Kid Rock is not going to make a run for the U.S.Senate, despite media speculation.

In two separate interviews, the avidly conservative classic rocker claims that Kid Rock was never seriously entertaining the thought of running, contradicting the rocker’s own public statements to the contrary.

“Are you kidding me? Could the GOP of Michigan be that stupid,” Nugent tells MLive. “Kid Rock never in his life thought of, hinted towards, considered or joked about running for public office.”

Kid Rock began hinting at a possible run to represent his home state of Michigan in the Senate in mid-July, first launching a website to promote a possible candidacy and then announcing that he would work to register voters.

He bridled at press suggestions that his campaign website was merely a ploy to sell merchandise, writing, “We will be scheduling a press conference in the next 6 weeks or so to address this issue, and if I decide to throw my hat in the ring for U.S. Senate, believe me … it’s game on mthrfkers.”

Nugent says the whole thing started as a rumor after Michigan Republicans started throwing around names for a Senate candidate in the wake of Donald Trump’s ascendance to the White House. He claims he’s been asked to run repeatedly, but as he’s no longer a Michigan resident, “someone in the room then just pulled out of their ass, well what about Kid Rock? That was it! That’s how it started! They went from what about Kid Rock, to Kid Rock’s running for Senate. Meanwhile, Kid Rock howled and laughed the whole time. He never considered running for Senate or public office.”

The 68-year-old “Cat Scratch Fever” singer and guitarist says the whole flap is indicative of the dysfunction of the Republican establishment in Michigan.

“Kid Rock will not go to the office every day,” he states. “That is a manifestation of the outrageous disconnect of the GOP. That it went from a random what about so and so, to so and so’s running, without calling so and so. How irresponsible. How unprofessional. How counterproductive. How blind to the system by which we got Trump elected in Michigan.”

Nugent calls establishment Republicans “the worst enemy in politics” in an interview with WZLX. “They do stupid stuff like getting John McCain as a nominee for president who represents nothing. Or Mitt Romney who brings a doily to a grenade fight, and represents milk toast and pablum. So this was a wakeup call.”

“But boy they blew it when they pulled ‘Kid Rock for Senate’ out of their ass. I mean, it’s fun and Kid Rock I’m sure sold a lot of merchandise that said ‘Kid Rock for Senate.’ But it shows the malfunctioning misfocus of the Republicans in spades.”

Sheryl Crow recently posted a new song online that addresses Kid Rock’s possible candidacy in a humorous light, singing, “At least the guy’s not 90 / In his 32nd term / But a pole in the Lincoln bedroom is bound to make some people squirm.”
