Ooh a new Ghostbusters trailer! I’m sure it will be met warmly, by a calm and nuanced response!

Personally, I think this new Ghostbusters trailer is an improvement over the last one. But then I didn’t think the last one was all that bad, and certainly not bad enough to warrant its status as the most disliked trailer in YouTube history. So I guess we’ll wait and see how this one is received.

Here’s how I look at this: Could the movie be good? Absolutely. Could it be bad? Sure. But on paper you have one of the hottest comedy directors in Hollywood (Paul Feig) and four of the funniest people (of any gender) on the planet in the form of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. It’s hard to imagine a better group to make a Ghostbusters movie in 2016 than this one (even if it’s proven wildly contentious for a small group of hardcore fans). Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world!

Although McCarthy and company aren’t playing Petra Venkman and Raye Stanz, this trailer does make the movie look a bit more like a remake of the Ivan Reitman original than I expected, right down to the scene in the mayor’s office (which looks very similar to the mayor’s office of 30 years ago, and where McCarthy says “We don’t want mass hysteria!” in a callback to Bill Murray’s classic line “Human sacrifice, dogs and cats, living together; mass hysteria!”). Again, I’m not saying that’s a good or a bad thing. It’s just a fact. I’ll wait to see the movie to decide whether that’s a good or a bad thing.

Ghostbusters opens in theaters on July 15.
