116 Texas Counties Still Under Burn Bans
Although the number of Texas counties with burn bans have dropped as we approach the new year, several West Texas counties won’t see their skies light up on New Years.
Burn bans for several counties on the South Plains and in the Texas Panhandle were approved by the Governor’s office this week, including banns for Potter, Randall, Hall, Parmer, Carson, Moore, Donley, Hartley, Collinsworth and Midland counties. Other counties have partial fireworks bans.
Even though several counties maintain fireworks bans, rain across the region has improved conditions. Officials in Wichita Falls have set the city’s fireworks show after the drought halted Fourth of July celebrations. Since August, 135 counties have lifted burn bans, bringing the total down from a record-breaking 251.
Despite improved conditions, officials still urge residents to exercise caution when setting off fireworks or participating in other at-risk activities.
